Frequently Asked Questions – Chimney Cleaning & Fireplace Services

How often should I have my chimney swept?

You should have your chimney swept at least once per year. If you use your fireplace frequently during winter, a second sweep is recommended mid-season. Annual cleaning is also a requirement for many insurance policies.

What signs indicate my chimney needs cleaning?

Look out for signs such as a strong smoky odour, smoke spilling into the room, visible creosote buildup, reduced heat output, or poor draft. If you notice any of these, book a sweep immediately.

What does a standard chimney sweep include?

Our standard chimney cleaning services remove soot, creosote, and blockages to improve airflow and prevent fire hazards. We use drop cloths and high-powered vacuums for a clean, mess-free result. The average sweep takes around 45 minutes.

Do you provide insurance or property sale inspection reports?

Yes, we offer full chimney inspections with detailed reports for insurance compliance and real estate transactions. Our inspections include airflow checks, smoke testing, and a review of any structural concerns.

Can you help if there’s smoke or draft issues in my fireplace?

Absolutely. We specialise in diagnosing and fixing smoke and draft problems. This includes addressing issues with airflow, negative pressure, faulty dampers, or chimney design flaws. We also repair or fit cowls to improve performance.

What services do you offer beyond chimney cleaning?

Our services include:

  • Chimney inspections and safety reports

  • Chimney repairs for fireboxes, brickwork, and baffles

  • Chimney maintenance including cowls, bird socks, and flue relining

  • Wood-burner installation, replacement, and removal

  • Bird nest removal and prevention

  • Smoke and draft troubleshooting

Is roof access needed for chimney sweeping?

Usually not. Most sweeps are performed from inside your home. However, some models such as older Jotul, Jayline Classic, or Woodsman Novo burners do require roof access. We will advise you beforehand if needed.

What should I do before a scheduled sweep or inspection?

Please clear the area in front of your fireplace and reduce any large ash beds to around 2 inches. This helps us work efficiently and safely. Also, ensure the fireplace has not been used on the day of the visit.

Can I use my fire the night before a chimney sweep?

Yes, using your fire the night before is fine. However, please ensure it is completely cold on the day of your appointment to allow for safe and efficient servicing.

Who is responsible for chimney cleaning in rental properties?

Landlords are responsible for maintaining chimneys in rental homes. This includes annual cleaning and safety checks, as required by most insurance policies and tenancy regulations.

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes, we offer discounts to Gold Card holders. They receive special rates. You may also qualify for discounts by engaging with our seasonal promotions.

What kind of firewood should I use?

Use dry, seasoned hardwoods such as manuka or blue gum. Avoid burning green wood, driftwood, or rubbish as they cause creosote buildup and damage your flue system.

Do fire bricks or air tubes need replacement?

Fire bricks protect your stove from overheating. Crumbled bricks should be replaced, while cracked bricks are usually safe. Damaged air tubes affect airflow and should be replaced to maintain efficiency.

What is a baffle and does it need maintenance?

A baffle directs smoke and gases toward the flue and reflects heat back into the fire. A damaged baffle reduces efficiency and safety. If broken, it should be repaired or replaced promptly.

What if birds nest in my chimney?

Contact us immediately. We safely remove nests and fit heavy-duty stainless steel bird socks to prevent future nesting. If a nest forms after a recent sweep, we will return to resolve the issue.

What causes a whistling noise from my flue?

Some modern fireplaces produce a whistling sound due to their airflow design. If it becomes bothersome, we can inspect the unit and suggest possible solutions.

When is the best time to service my fireplace?

Follow our Social Media Pages and subscribe to our Newsletter! We have occassional discounts and promotions. At times, we also offer off-peak discount rates.

Can I use my fire after it’s been cleaned?

Yes, once the sweep is complete and we have confirmed it is safe, you can continue using your fire as usual. Just ensure it was cold during the day of service.

Do you provide reminders for annual sweeping?

Yes, we offer annual chimney sweep reminders so you can stay on top of your maintenance schedule with minimal effort.
